Whilst constant speculation links Manchester United with a new signing everyday, there are those rumours that stick around for months on end. Based on these rumours, here’s how Manchester United could line up for the 2017/18 English Premier League season.
If Mourinho had his way, this would be Manchester United’s team for next season. Whilst Zlatan Ibrahimovic provided a number of key goals last season, 28 in all competitions, he struggled in being a complete forward, and became a one dimensional striker capable of scoring goals, but not contributing much to the overall team play. Harry Kane would not be such a striker.
At only 23, Kane possesses the pace that Ibrahimovic lacked last season, and would be a striker that can link up the play as well as score goals. His pace, strength, and quick reaction times would make him the perfect foil to Paul Pogba, who can float balls over the top for him. However, with Daniel Levy demanding £200m for his signature, it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing Harry Kane in Salford any time soon.
Despite winning the Champions League and La Liga, Gareth Bale’s season at Real Madrid will ultimately be seen as a disappointment. With injuries keeping him out of action, and the emergence of Real Madrid’s young blood, such as Asensio, Vazquez and Isco filling the void left by the Welshman, we may see Bale’s early departure from the Bernabeu.
If Bale was to leave Real Madrid, Manchester United would be the perfect club for him. Rather than sit in the shadow of Ronaldo, Bale would be the main star at Manchester United, allowing him to show off his world-class skill in an environment where he can thrive.
Whilst Manchester United do have incredible pull in the transfer market, we’ve seen over the past couple of seasons that Ed Woodward is not someone that can always close the deal, case in point; Toni Kroos, Arturo Vidal and Gareth Bale.
Alvaro Morata is very much the second choice striker at Real Madrid, and with Cristiano Ronaldo continuing his transition into the no.9 role, he may even become third choice by the end of the August. A proven goal scorer, 27 goals in all competitions, and a player capable of linking attack and midfield, Morata is a striker that suits Mourinho’s style of play.
While he wouldn’t be cheap, it wouldn’t be unlikely for the Spaniard to be wearing red come August.
With Carrick getting older, and considering retirement, United are in need of another defensive midfielder, and Nemanja Matic could be the perfect option. Operating as an ‘anchor man’, Matic is a player who can stop opposition attacks and then start a counter by bringing the ball to the feet of his teams more attacking players.
Although he received criticism from Mourinho during his second spell at Chelsea, it’s clear that Jose Mourinho has a lot of love for the Serbian, calling him a “monster” after Chelsea defeated Sporting Lisbon in 2014, and also had the following to say about his former player:
“It is difficult [for Matic] to lose the ball. But at the same time he is not the kind of guy to play any square passes. He can do so and keep possession, but he can see the movement forward, look at the passing into space.”
